How can collective spaces in a shared office environment inspire different startup teams while putting innovation on display? For the new Matrix Life Science & Health Innovation Center on Amsterdam’s Zuidas, Silo will develop a unique spatial identity that reflects the organisation’s values while creating a cohesive and empowering environment.
The VU campus on Amsterdam’s Zuidas is evolving into a vibrant mixed-use area, integrating education, research, housing, and culture. Positioned on De Boelelaan next to the VU Research Building, the innovation centre will be a dynamic hub for startups and scale-ups in medical technology and life sciences. Designed by Nudus, the building features two intersecting volumes that create an open space, extending public areas and forming a new urban square for community engagement. The interior is designed by Fokkema & Partners.
Spatial branding brings a fresh perspective to the building. The diverse community of tenants and researchers shares a common mindset: a drive to question, explore, and innovate. This progressive approach is central to Life Sciences and Health Tech, accelerating technological advancement and valorisation. Matrix embodies this state of mind with top-notch facilities, a dynamic work environment, and a space that feels like a second home.
The Matrix Life Science & Health Innovation Center is part of a broader initiative led by the University of Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the City of Amsterdam, and Rabobank to invest in expanding Matrix centres for science and technology over the next decade. The MIC is expected to open in 2027, further strengthening Amsterdam’s innovation ecosystem.
