28 May 2017

At the European Design Awards award show in Porto on May 27, 2017, Silo came out as the night’s biggest winner. Furthermore, Silo was named European Design Agency of the Year. In 2012 Silo was also Agency of the Year.

History in the making

It is the first time in the history of the awards program that this honour befalls the same agency twice. Silo received two Gold Awards for Zaans Medical Center this year, a Gold Award for Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ and two Bronze Awards for Life Sciences Incubator and New Delftware.

We are overjoyed to be Agency of the Year for the second time. It is a great boost for our team which has worked very hard this past year. I would also like to thank our clients for the great collaborations that have made this possible.”

Zaans Medical Centre

The healing environment in Zaans Medical Centre was awarded gold two times. In the new hospital, much attention has been paid to providing positive distraction and an optimal user experience for patients and visitors. In collaboration with Mecanoo Architecten, Silo created the spatial identity from a human-centred approach, focusing on the users.

“Being sick often means an increased amount of stress and emotion. This does not benefit the recovery process. Our goal was to improve the relationship between the building and its users. This has resulted in poetic illustrations that offer positive distraction,” said Rene Toneman of Silo.

Muziekgebouw

Muziekgebouw‘s branding won gold in the Printed Identity Applications category. Muziekgebouw is an internationally leading stage in Amsterdam, which excels in contemporary music and the related genres of classical, jazz, electronic pop music, and world music. Since 2008, Silo has been working with Muziekgebouw to inspire and surprise audiences with a broad interest in music.

Life Sciences Incubator

For the Life Sciences Incubator (LSI), Silo received a Bronze European Design Award in the Signs & Displays category. The LSI of Utrecht University offers workspaces for startups in bioscience. The building houses both laboratories and offices. Like ZMC, this project was done by Silo in collaboration with Mecanoo Architecten. Silo developed a spatial design with a focus on privacy for users.

Punt Uit!

Punt Uit was also awarded bronze in the category of Corporate Illustration. Punt Uit is an exceptional B&B in the old city centre of Delft. You won’t forget a stay at Punt Uit. The brand identity concept was inspired by the typical artwork found on Delft Blue tiles. The logo, typography, signs, labels, and illustrations are hand-painted.
