Spatial branding for St. Maarten General Hospital – Update

19 March 2025

The construction of St. Maarten General Hospital (SMGH) is progressing steadily, bringing the island closer to establishing a leading – hurricane-proof – medical institution in the Caribbean. Since 2020, Silo has been working closely with SMGH to create a healthcare environment that truly reflects the hospital’s values and ambitions. Based on an integrated spatial branding concept, we recently completed the wayfinding and signage design and are now focused on designing both fixed and loose furniture.

Silo has created the hospital’s identity, reinforcing its mission of “quality care close to home.” Unlike most European hospitals, however, SMGH serves not only a diverse local population but also a significant number of international visitors, predominantly from the United States. This unique positioning demands a careful balance between community needs and the expectations of global patients.

From the outset, the client has taken a forward-thinking approach, integrating branding, interior design, and signage to enhance the healthcare experience. Inspired by Silo’s work on the Zaans Medical Centre and insights from modern Dutch hospitals, the SMGH project goes beyond functionality. Ultimately, it aims to create spaces that embrace a local flavour while prioritising comfort, well-being, and efficiency.

At the core of the design is the “blue forest” spatial branding concept, which incorporates biophilic elements using natural light, calming colours, and organic forms to promote a healing environment. By integrating greenery and nature-inspired visuals, the hospital will connect to the environment, thereby contributing to patient and staff well-being.

As construction advances, we continue our focus on refining the interior experience to align with the brand strategy. Together with the client, we are striving to raise the bar on healthcare environments in the Caribbean.
