Testing is a significant part of the design process. Each user test reminds us how valuable it is to engage with end-users and learn from them. It helps us create solutions that truly meet their needs. Most importantly, it challenges assumptions and keeps the design grounded in reality.
Rogier and Eline recently spent a day at Forum Groningen to conduct a user test. The feedback from a wide range of visitors – aged 18 to 75, from seasoned locals to international first-timers – will help us fine-tune the building visual that lies at the core of our wayfinding redesign.

As a multipurpose venue, Forum offers everything from a library to a cinema, exhibition spaces to food and beverage outlets, event venues to a rooftop with gorgeous views. But Forum is not an easy building to read, especially for first-time visitors. Its dramatic atrium route connects various floors across different towers, while the two lifts each give access to separate areas. The crisscrossing escalators disrupt visitors’ spatial orientation and blur the distinction between east and west.
Silo’s work for Forum not only focuses on improving navigation and orientation, but more importantly, we’re looking at ways to enhance how visitors engage with the diverse programme of this cultural behemoth. We’re rethinking and innovating routing and communication.
By testing the building visual, our goal is to verify the optimal balance between information density and clarity and identify blind spots. The next step is to finish the design stage.
